Sleep is one of the many ne’mat of Allah bestowed upon mankind. It is a means of rest and rejuvenation, a time of pleasure, quiet and solitude. Indeed in the case of a sa’im (fasting person), it is ibadat.
Awliyaullah (AS) have given numerous nuskha regarding sleep, including how to sleep, when to sleep and even what to do if one can not sleep.
- Rasulullah (SAW) advises: Make sure your children sleep with their hands free from the smell of food. This will keep shaitan away from them.
- Reciting
7 times at bedtime keeps nightmares at bay.
- If sleep eludes you recite this ayat 110 times: وَ جَعَلٍّنَا نَوٍّمَكُم سُبَاتا
- Rasulullah (SAW) states: If anyone wishes to wake up at a certain time, then he should recite this dua when he lays down at night
Allah will assign a firishta to wake him up at the desired hour *(state the time you want to wake after reciting the dua)
In the Chehlum waaz, Aqa Moula (TUS) affectionately advised mumineen, especially students:
"Spend a restful night, do not fret, or worry, it is of no use. Bundle up your troubles and deposit them in the cupboard. When morning comes you will be rested and alert, your thoughts will be clear, this is the time to plan. Make a program and work on it. If you spend the night worrying, you will wake up tired and unable to concentrate. Sleep early and wake early and perform namaaz on time. Then recite Quran e Majeed and start work. You will be able to think better and learn better. What you may have spent hours pondering over at night will be done in an hour."
