One day Imam Hasan (SA) and Imam Husain (SA) came to Rasulullah (SAW). Imam Husain (SA) asked;'Beloved grandfather, we were both wrestling to see which of us was stronger, but neither could overcome the other. We have come to ask you to decide which of us is stronger?’ Rasulullah (SAW) replied, “Beloved children, write something and bring it to me; the one with the better handwriting is also the stronger.’
Both Imam Hasan (SA) and Husain (SA) wrote something and brought it to Rasulullah (SAW). 'Nana Nabi (SAW), which one of us has better handwriting?' they asked. For sometime Rasulullah (SAW) did not answer. He did not want to disappoint either son. Finally he said 'Go to your father, Ali (SA) and he will decide who has better handwriting.
They both went to Ali (SA) and said ‘Nana Rasulullah (SAW) has sent us to ask you which one of us has better handwriting.’ Amir al-Mumineen (SA) did not wish to hurt either of them and so he said, 'Beloved children go to your mother Fatema (SA) and she shall decide who has the better writing'.
They went to Maulatuna Fatema (SA) saying ‘Rasulullah (SAW) sent us to our father Ali (SA) and he sent us to ask you to decide which of us has better handwriting.’
Maulatuna Fatema (SA) understood that Rasulullah (SAW) and Amir al-Mumineen (SA) did not want to upset either of the children so they had sent them to her.
Maulatuna Fatema (SA) said 'Beloved children, I have a pearl necklace which I will scatter. Whoever gathers more pearls has the better handwriting and is also the stronger.’
The necklace contained seven pearls. She scattered them and they both started picking them up. Imam Hasan (SA) gathered three pearls and Imam Husain (SA) gathered 3 pearls. Only one pearl remained. Allah sent Jibraeel. Jibraeel struck the last pearl with his wing. Now there were two pearls. Hasan (SA) took one and Husain (SA) took one.
Imam Hasan (SA) and Husain (SA) took the pearls to Maulatuna Fatema (SA) who told them that since both of them had an equal number of pearls, their handwriting and strength were equal. They were both extremely pleased upon hearing this.
