One day a group of mushrikeen approached Rasulallah (SAW) and stated, "You claim that you are a prophet, but we will not accept this unless you prove it by doing what we ask of you."
When Rasulullah (SAW) inquired what they wished him to do, they asked him to order a tree to come out from its roots and stand in front of him. Rasulallah (SAW) asked if on witnessing this they would accept Islam. They replied that indeed they would, but Rasulallah (SAW) stated that he knew for a fact that they would not accept Islam, even after witnessing this miracle.
Rasulallah (SAW) summoned the tree, and it came and stood in front of him. Amirul mumineen (SA) who was also present said that a few branches of the tree were touching his shoulder.
The mushrikeen then asked Rasulallah (SAW) to command the tree to return to where it had come from. Rasulallah (SAW) ordered the tree to return and it did.
Then,they told Rasuallah(SAW) that they wanted to see the tree split in half and one half to approach him, while the other remained in place. Rasulallah(SAW)once more summoned the tree and again the tree obeyed.
The mushrikeen were defiant. After witnessing all this, they again asked Rasulullah (SAW) to order the tree to return.It did as ordered.
Amirul Mumineen (AS) in that instant declared, "There is no god other than Allah and Mohammed is his prophet." He proclaimed that what they had all witnessed was a miracle.
The mushrikeen however would not accept this miracle and claimed that it was only magic. Pointing to Amirul Mumineen (AS) they spitefully said to Rasulullah (SAW), "Only people like him would believe in you."
Saying this the mushrikeen turned and left.
