In the era of Imam Jafar us Sadiq (SA), Abu Dawaniq was the caliph.

Abu Dawaniq persecuted and killed the shia of Aale Muhammad. He even tried to assassinate the Imam (SA) himself.

Abu Dawaniq invited the Imam (SA) to his palace. He had ordered his hangman to prepare his sword. As the Imam (SA) entered the palace he whispered a silent prayer to Allah. As a result, Abu Dawaniq's plan was foiled and he was unable to hurt the Imam (SA).

Instead of giving the order to kill the Imam, Abu Dawaniq welcomed the Imam (AS) with respect and asked him to sit on his throne. He then pleaded “I am here to serve you as you please.” The Imam (SA) replied, "I have no need for your services. If I need something, I shall come to you myself. All I wish is to return home.” With these words the Imam (SA) left the palace unharmed.

Abu Dawaniq’s vazir who was a Shia was taken by surprise at Abu Dawaniq’s change of plan. The vazir asked him why he had spared the Imam (SA) instead of executing him. Abu Dawaniq replied, “I saw a huge python with his mouth wide open. He threatened, “Beware! If you try to hurt the Imam (SA) I shall swallow you down along with your throne! I was so scared I could do nothing and I had to let the Imam (SA) go.”
