Misbah Milad (1424) Issue

It is the day of Aqa Maula Syedna Mohammed Burhanuddin (TUS)'s milaad mubarak. Ninety-two years today Aqa Maula was born. Ninety-two years later we rejoice the occasion, with traditional ceremonies, each of them time-honored and meaningful.

The wadhawanu ceremony is one of the main events of the day. The practice was adopted and adapted from an array of cultural traditions. The ceremony involves the use of a decorated dish-thaali and a handful of salt.

The tradition goes back to the wedding ceremony of Maulatuna Fatema (AS). Asma binte Umaish had seen several grand weddings in Habasha. Asma complained to Rasullulah (SA) that it was sad that there were no thaalis full of sweetmeats for nisar, for distribution among the mumineen in Maulatuna Fatema's (AS) wedding, like she had seen back in Habasha. Rasulullah (SA) replied that Fatema (AS) had been wedded by Allah in heaven, and that the angles had done nisaar of rubies, zamarrud and pearls.

The wadhawani thaali, today, is decorated with a variety of confectionery. Traditionally two coconuts or two pieces of fruit are placed in the center. A silver coin marked with the shahadat and names of panjatan and a silver or gold beetle leaf are part of the dish. The act of revolving the thaali thrice or seven times symbolizes homage, joy and well wishing. Bala is then taken, as a gesture of taking misfortune on oneself. In the end a handful of salt is revolved once over the head to ward off evil.
