It was Eid. Imam Hasan and Husain (AS) were sitting in the lap of Nana Rasulullah (SA). They said to him: Today the Arab children are wearing colorful new clothes, but the two of us have none. We have come to you to ask for new clothes as Eid gifts.
Rasulullah (SA) began to think: there were no new clothes in the house and there was not enough money to buy new ones. What could he do? He could not bear to see their hearts broken. "Please make my two grandchildren happy", Rasulullah (SA) asked Allah.
At that very moment, Jibraeel came to earth with two white clothes, clothes from heaven. But when Imam Hasan and Husain (AS) saw them they demanded, "These are white clothes, while the Arab children are dressed in colorful clothes."
Jibraeel asked Rasulullah (SA) to send for a tray and a pot of water. Rasulullah (SA) put Imam Hasan's (AS) clothes in the tray, and asked: What color clothes do you want, dearest Hasan? Imam Hasan (AS) replied that he wanted green clothes. Jibraeel poured water from the pot into the tray while Rasulullah (SA) turned the clothes around. And the white was turned into an emerald green color.
Then, Rasulullah (SA) put Imam Husain's (AS) clothes on the tray, and asked: What color do you want, dearest Husain? Imam Husain (RA) replied that he wanted a red color! The color of blood that would cover his clothes on the day of Ashura!
Jibraeel poured water, Rasulullah (SA) turned the clothes around and the dress became red, as red as a ruby.
Rasulullah (SA) was glad that Imam Hasan and Husain (SA) were pleased with their clothes. But what did he see? He saw tears in the eyes of Jibraeel. Why are you crying, he asked Jibraeel. Jibraeel replied: when Imam Hasan (AS) chose a green color for his clothes, I was reminded of the day when Laeen Moawiyah will poison him which will turn his body green, and break his liver into seventy two pieces. When Imam Husain (AS) chose a red color for his dress, I was reminded of the day of Ashura when his body will be covered in wounds and blood.
On hearing this, Rasulullah (SA) too began to cry. Can a mumin, then, not cry and do matam on hearing this riwayat?
