Awliyaullah (AS) have guided us towards healthy living by cultivating the right habits. Islamic teachings cover all aspects of life: eating, drinking, sleeping, walking, even evacuation, in fact Rasulullah (SA) has laid down 12 rules for using the toilet.
Aqa Maula (TUS) has repetitively urged mumineen to build Indian style toilets in their homes instead of the Western toilet seats. This not only ensures taharat, but has several health benefits as research has shown.
Studies show that people who use toilet seats often feel that there is still something left after excretion. This is because the anal canal is "unstraightened" when seated. Bowel evacuation when seated results in obstructive constipation. Oncologists believe that 80% of colon cancers occur due to improper evacuation. Experts suggest that this is the reason why colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in countries where people use toilet seats. In Asian and African cultures where squatting is the norm, colon cancer is virtually unknown.
Another serious condition caused by sitting to evacuate instead of squatting is the leakage of wastes into the small intestine due to which toxins enter the blood stream; this puts pressure on the liver in detoxication.
In the Western style sitting position it is also difficult to practice some of the 12 rules that Rasulullah (SA) has laid down. For one, it is impossible to put pressure on the left foot while evacuating. Experts in acupressure suggest that there are pressure points in the left foot that help constipation and relieve digestion problems. Also the comfortable position on the toilet seat encourages longer sitting time and sometimes even newspaper reading in the toilet, which is undesirable.
