Ta'if. Weary of the persecution of the mushrekeen, Rasulullah (SAW) found shade under a tree in the private orchard of 'Utba bin Waleed. Word was sent to 'Utba that Mohammed (SAW) had honored his house and was thirsty. 'Utba presented a bunch of eighteen grapes to Rasulullah (SAW) As a result of Rasulullah's (SAW) dua for 'Utba, Allah granted 'Utba the honor of having 18 Duat Mutlaqeen in his progeny.
Syedna Ali Shamsuddin (RA) is the eighteenth Dai from the lineage of 'Utba bin Waleed. Two esteemed lineages combine in Syedna Shamsuddin (RA) that of Syedna Idris Imaduddin (RA), and that of Syedi Hasan bin Nooh. The latter had aided Dawat during the uprising of Zaidi. The daughter of Syedi Hasan bin Nooh (RA), named Na'amah, was wedded to the great grandson of Syedna Idrees (RA) to whom Syedna Shamsuddin (RA) was born.
Yemen. Syedna Mohammed Ezzuddin (RA), the twenty-third Dai al Mutlaq (RA) transferred the seat of Dawat from Yemen to Hind by appointing Syedna Yusuf Najmuddin (RA) his successor.
The twenty-ninth Dai, Syedna Abdut Tayeb Zakiuddin (RA), proclaimed Syedna Ali Shamsuddin (RA) his successor in Yemen. Thus Syedna Shamsuddin became the twenty-fourth amongst the Duat of Yemen and the 30th Dai al Mutlaq in the line of succession. The prophecy was thus fulfilled-eighteen Duat Mutlaqeeen (RA) in the lineage of 'Utba.
Syedna Shamsuddin (RA) passed away on the 15th of Rabei ul Awwal 1042 H.:he reigned for one year and twenty days. Several volumes written by him are preserved in the Dawat treasury today. His script is known to be both unique and beautiful. His qabar mubarak is in Yemen.
