Syedna Ali Shamsuddin (RA) was the 18th Dai al Mutlaq. He reached the epitome of taqwa, knowledge and virtue at a very young age. When he heard the news of the passing away of his predecessor in Zimarmar he immediately mounted his horse and hurried towards Zimarmar. When he arrived, Amir Imaduddin ordered the beating of drums and the lighting up of fire in celebration: he stated that one king, one Dai had passed away but in his position was this Dai.
J'afar La'een came to Yemen in the hazrat of Syedna to study the kutub of dawat, vying for a position. He returned to Hindustan and lead namaaz without raza. He then drenched the kutub of dawat in water, and harmed the beliefs of several hundred people-very few remained steadfast. The efforts of Maulaya Raj during the time of this uprising, were exemplary.
Syedna Ali Shamsuddin (RA) stayed in Zimarmar for a while, but he was persecuted by the Zaidi leader. Finally he gave up the fortress for the safety of mumineen. Syedna then moved to the fortress of Afedat, and from there to Haraaz. Syedna wanted to go to Shibam where Syedna Idrees (RA) resided. Syedna Idrees (RA) had written: We are ready for battle at your command. You do not need to give up your fortresses." Syedna replied: Allah's will shall come to pass.
Syedna (RA) was weakened and tired by the continual oppression. His brother took him to Shareqa where Syedna passed away. His successor Syedna Idrees (RA) hurried to Shareqa in thundering rain. That day hundreds of people had gathered from all over Haraaz. Syedna Idrees (RA) comments that he recalled to mind the verse of Mutanabbi: The people grieved so loud as if they heard the cry of Musa (AS) on the day Tur mountain broke into pieces.
