What is your area of specialization?
I am an Interventional Cardiologist sometimes referred to as an Interventionalist. I perform balloon angioplasty and insert stents to open narrowed blood vessels. I also diagnose and treat cardiac and vascular diseases. I am a Diplomat of the American College of Cardiology certified by The American Board of Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Diseases.
Syedna Taher Saifuddin (RA) often advised youngsters to take up the medical profession. How do you think this profession has helped you in life?
For me, cardiology has been a very fulfilling experience. I am thankful to Allah for being able to touch so many hearts and lives. I have lived through the joys and tears of so many people.
I continue to be fascinated by the mysteries of the human body and the intimate connection it has with the universe. The medical profession is closely linked to life and death. Therefore it is a constant reminder of the beginning and the end, and of the Quranic verse: 'When I am ill, it is only Allah who shall cure me'.
In a country like America, isn't it easy to get caught up in the scientific aspect of medicine and lose contact with its spiritual base?
Aqa Maula (TUS) in his discourse to the professionals in Karachi said: the more the physical knowledge (mahsusaat), the more the spiritual knowledge (m'aqulaat). Scientific discovery humbles the discoverer. Science is to spirit as body is to the soul. Al 'ilm is all comprehensive; science has yet to learn about Al 'ilm.
As a doctor, what do you think the implications of the newly-built Saifee Hospital are?
Saifee Hospital marks a new era in health care. It is a state-of-the-art medical facility blessed with the dua mubarak of Aqa Maula (TUS). It has catapulted us to the forefront of medical care and has also helped change the misconceived image of Islam held in the West, and perhaps in India itself. I can foresee this being a catalyst for more projects.
You have treated many of Syedna's (TUS) family members. How else do you endeavor to do Maula's (TUS) khidmet through your chosen field?
I can never be thankful enough to my Maula (TUS) for granting me the privilege of trusting me as a doctor. I hope to continue expanding my expertise so I can pass on its benefits to everybody, particularly to those who need it. Following my Maula's (TUS) advice to the fullest would be the best khidmet I can render.
What would you advise young doctors of the community?
My advice to young doctors is to attend Aqa Maula's (TUS) Ashara Mubaraka to achieve the highest level possible in both deen and duniya. Strive to be the best, but be ready for sacrifice and have patience. Have faith that good will follow!
