The 94th milad mubrak of Aqa Maula (TUS) was celebrated with great joy across the world - but this year the celebrations had an added air of excitement, for they marked the fruition of a long cherished dream - the opening of Saifee Hospital in Mumbai in its new form: a state of the art multi-specialty hospital bringing affordable healthcare to all.
"I am much pleased today," Maula (TUS) stated to mumineen during the darees. The joy was echoed on June 4, 2005, when the hospital was inaugurated by the honorable Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
Soon after, scores of dignitaries and VIPs from across the world and mumineen had the opportunity to tour the facility and they were overcome with pride and awe.
Saifee Hospital opens with a 259 inpatient capacity and medical teams in 33 specialized departments supported by 200 consultant specialists, some of them leading in their fields. Supported by the finest medical equipment available today, the hospital provides a medical infrastructure that sets new standards in diagnosis, therapy and patient care. The hospital is expected to be staffed by 700 medical and support personnel, including 27 managers, 180 nurses, 40 skilled technicians and over 100 staff dedicated to security and engineering.
The department of alternative medicine, unique in Mumbai, includes homeopathy, yoga, Unani medicine and physio-therapy with a fully equipped gym.
Saifee Hospital stands out for its emphasis on patient care and comfort. This is apparent in the design of the interiors and the planning of the rooms and wards. Step into Saifee hospital and you'll probably feel you're in a plush hotel and not in the lobby of a hospital! There are five kinds of rooms and wards - deluxe, first class, twin sharing, economy and general ward. All of the rooms are centrally air-conditioned, luxuriously appointed, spacious and airy. Most have fantastic views of the sea, while equal emphasis has been placed on privacy and hygiene.
Special care has been taken to design three of the special wards, viz, The ICU, the paediatric and the maternity wards. The ICU has 37 beds, with separate Neo-natal ICU with 8 beds. It also has a waiting area and an equal number of beds for relatives. The maternity ward has a separate entrance and elevators to maximize privacy. The pediatric ward has been specially designed to create a cheerful ambience.
The entire hospital is managed by a computerized Building Management System (BMS). This also manages a sophisticated safety, security and fire control system. For the first time in Mumbai, water meeting WHO standards is available from every tap in the building. Environment friendly protocols have been implemented which include rain water harvesting, solar heating of water, efficient lighting and carefully planned and controlled utilities.
Possibly the most challenging aspect of designing the hospital was trying to fit in a project with such a vast scope into a narrow plot of land. Using ingenious structural devices and design elements such as three-story deep basements and corbels, the architects and engineers were able to build not just a building that houses a state-of the art facility but a magnificent edifice that stands out against Mumbai's distinctive skyline.
"Among the many things that I give to you for your well-being, Saifee Hospital is one such gift," said Maula (TUS) at the iftetah darees. For this and more we are humbly grateful to our Maula (TUS) and pray for his good health and long life.
