It is the essence of the Quran e majeed, a surah that is superior to all others. It embodies the philosophy of a mumin's life. It is known even to the youngest child, as
Also known as...
Though most commonly known as Al Hamd, this surah has other special names too
- (al Fateha): it is the opening surah of the Quran e Majeed.
- (Ummul kitaab): the mother of the Quran; the essence of the Quran e majeed is encompassed in these seven aayats.
- (As sab 'ul masaani): It has seven verses
that are repeated in every two rak'ats of namaaz.
The missing letter
Husain Imam (AS) was once taken ill, and was in great pain, Maulatuna Fatema (AS) carried him to Rasulullah (SAW) and appealed to him for dua and shifa.
Jibra'eel came to Rasulullah (SAW) saying that each surah that has been revealed to you in the Quran contains the letter , excepting al Hamd. There is no in it -- the that stands for (misfortune).
Jibra'eel asked Rasulullah to call for a glass of water, and recite into it 40 times, and then sprinkle the water on Husain Imam (AS).
Rasulullah (SAW) did so and it was as if Imam Husain (AS) had been released from invisible shackles.
Salient Points
-
Namaaz is incomplete without this surah. Reciting al Hamd in namaaz is sufficient by itself, while reciting any other surah without al Hamd is unacceptable. If one forgets Al Hamd, he must pray again.
- Aqa Maula (TUS) instructs mumineen to do the tasbeeh
1073 times for aches and pains. This tasbeeh is used especially for leg pain and Hidayat.
- In Raudat Tahera, al Hamd is embedded with rubies.
- It is a custom of the Ahl e Bayt upon finishing Quran e Majeed to recite al Hamd again, as if beginning anew, since the recitation of Quran e majeed is ever continuous.
- In Sura tul Yunus it is mentioned that the close of mumineen's dua in heaven will be
Siraat e Mustaqeem
Some interpreters mention that the Siraat (the straight path) is a bridge between jannat and jahannam... it is described as being narrower than a hair and sharper than a sword. On the day of Qiyamat, whoever is able to maintain his balance on this bridge, enters jannat and whoever falls will fall into jahannam.
Hudaat Kiraam (RA) refute this meaning by exclaiming that if this was so then it would become necessary for everyone to practice tight rope walking rather than anything else, in preparation for that day!
Each Nabi, Wasi, Imam and during the seclusion of Imam (AS), Duat Mutlaqeen (RA) guide mumineen towards the straight path of Tawheed and protect them from going astray: they themselves are the for their followers.
